What to put in a professional zoom background

What to Include in Your Zoom Background for a Professional Look

Most advice about Zoom backgrounds focuses on what to avoid.

Don't show your messy kitchen, don't use a distracting pattern, don't look like you're calling from a cave. All valid. But it's more useful to flip the question and think about what actually makes a background work well for professional calls. The answer is simpler than you might think, and once you know what to look for it becomes pretty easy to spot a good one.

1. Natural or Warm Light

Good lighting is the foundation of any professional-looking video call. A backdrop that shows natural light coming from a window, or warm interior lighting that feels soft and even, immediately reads as more polished than a flat, harshly lit space.

The light in your background and the light on your face should feel consistent. If your background looks sunny and bright but your face is dark and shadowy, the mismatch will be jarring. Aim for backgrounds where the lighting feels cohesive with your own setup. Hopefully that is warm, natural, and flattering.

2. Lived-In but Tidy

There's a sweet spot between "suspiciously perfect showroom" and "needs a good cleanup." That sweet spot is where the best professional backgrounds live. A space that looks like someone actually works there, with just enough detail to feel real, is far more convincing and approachable than one that looks fake and staged.

Think a bookshelf with real books. A desk with a lamp and a plant rather than nothing at all. Small details that suggest the background is a real space, without anything that distracts from you.

3. Neutral, Complementary Colors

Your background shouldn't compete with you visually. The best professional backgrounds stick to warm neutrals: whites, creams, warm greys, natural wood tones or pastels. This way the focus stays on your face and you avoid using backgrounds that are dated because they're trying to hard to ride a trend. Avoid anything with strong patterns, bold colors, or high contrast.

This is why you'll see most of our backgrounds have warm, natural tones and look great as a professional backdrop behind you. That said, neutral doesn't have to mean boring. A warm beige wall with a piece of simple art, or a softly lit bookshelf in natural wood tones, can be beautiful and interesting. The goal is a background that people notice briefly and then forget about, because their attention is on the meeting and the important things you're discussing.

4. The Right Amount of Empty Space

Where you sit within your background matters as much as what's in it. Ideally your background has enough visual space that you don't look cramped. A background that's too busy right where your head sits will make the edges of your silhouette harder to read and make the whole frame feel cluttered.

The sweet spot is a background with its most interesting elements slightly off-center or in the mid-ground, leaving clean space where you actually appear in the frame.

A good professional Zoom background doesn't need to be elaborate. It just needs to look real, feel appropriate for the context, and keep the focus on you. Natural light, some lived-in detail, and colors that don't compete with your face will get you most of the way there.
